| Legacy Flight
inaugurates the newest Celestis service -- Earthrise.
The Legacy Flight is our sixth Memorial
Spaceflight. The Legacy Flight will be
launched from Spaceport America (New Mexico) aboard
a SpaceLoft XL rocket provided by UP
Aerospace.
The launch, scheduled for April 28th,
2007, will place a symbolic portion of
the cremated remains of approximately 200 participants
from more than 10 nations into space on a suborbital
trajectory similar to NASA's early Mercury manned
spaceflights in the 1960s. The Earthrise service
launches flight capsules and modules into space
and returns them to Earth via parachute recovery.
Once recovered the Celestis capsules and modules
are returned to family members and loved ones,
providing them with a flown keepsake.
Participants
Celestis is honored to include two space pioneers
among the approximately 200 participants aboard
Legacy. Mercury astronaut L.
Gordon Cooper and Star Trek™
actor James Doohan join people
from many countries, professions, faiths, and
interests to make this the largest and most diverse
memorial spaceflight ever. More...
Preceding the launch, on April 27th at the New
Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamagordo,
will be a public memorial service honoring all
of our participants and providing a special opportunity
for fans and friends of James Doohan and Gordon
Cooper to attend a special commemoration of their
lives and contributions.
Also aboard the Legacy Flight are:
- inspirational messages saluting and remembering
Cooper and Doohan;
- messages for thousands of students in Japan
and the United States;
- star dedications from NameAStarLive.com;
and
- a special CD of music composed and performed
in honor of Celestis by the noted Russian band,
Cyclotimia.
