In 2026, his story will take an extraordinary new step.

Celestis is honored to announce that a symbolic portion of Willy Ley’s cremated remains will fly aboard Serenity Flight, our next Earth-orbit memorial mission launching from Cape Canaveral. It is a tribute that beautifully aligns with his life’s work: transforming spaceflight from speculation into expectation.

A Legacy Built on Imagination, Science, and Courage

Born in Berlin in 1906, Ley was among the founding members of the Verein für Raumschiffahrt (VfR), the early amateur rocketry society whose ideas shaped the foundations of modern aerospace engineering. After fleeing Nazi Germany in 1935, he became a U.S. citizen and one of America’s most influential science communicators.

His 1949 book The Conquest of Space, illustrated with striking, futuristic imagery, became a touchstone for a generation that would go on to build NASA, design spacecraft, and ultimately walk on the Moon. His work appeared in Life, Time, and Galaxy, bringing the dream of spaceflight into living rooms decades before the first launch pads rose from the Florida coast.

A crater on the far side of the Moon bears his name. He died in June 1969, just weeks before Apollo 11 fulfilled the vision he championed.

A Remarkable Rediscovery

In early 2025, Ley’s cremated remains were unexpectedly discovered in the basement of a Manhattan apartment building, a story first reported by the New York Times.

The rediscovery sparked international interest and renewed appreciation for Ley’s role in shaping humanity’s earliest conversations about space. It also opened the door for a meaningful tribute: bringing him into orbit aboard a mission aligned with the legacy he helped create.

Serenity Flight: A Tribute in Orbit

Serenity Flight will place a symbolic portion of Ley’s remains into Earth orbit alongside other participants who share a common passion for exploration, legacy, and meaning. Like all Celestis orbital missions, the spacecraft will circle our planet for months to years before its natural reentry—creating a poetic, celestial farewell.

To accompany the launch, Celestis hosts multi-day memorial activities, mission briefings, and a launch viewing experience for families.
